My Fashion Experience
Something I admired in others, their innate fashion sense, is a part of my life now too and it’s a peaceful feeling because it simply happened over time and as a result of being more aware of my personal style than ever before. Personal style is always evolving, true…
But let’s face it, once you pass the teen years you most likely don’t swing from goth to geek, from preppy to punk. Our style may evolve, but the extreme swings seem to be left behind in our youth when all we wanted was to find out who we were and what we stood for. Once you have accepted the aging process, you notice that it’s actually a beautiful thing the moment you can concentrate less on finding yourself and more on finding the things you like and the people you want in your life – all the things that will fit into your “world”. The quest for self feels less hurried because you have a better sense of who you are which allows you to focus more on selecting what fits into your bubble. As personal style, home style, etc. evolves – and hopefully – gets better and better, you feel so good in your own skin. This process is different for everyone, may happen sooner or later (or never), but when it does happen (and can happen at any age), you feel so good knowing you are who you are and that truth is total freedom. It’s a defining moment really – when you look in your closet, in the mirror and at your home and the people in your life and say, “Yeah, these things all work nicely together”.
When it comes to fashion and style, it sometimes seems that everyone and their mother (literally!) have tried-and-true tips and tricks they absolutely swear by. Some are useful, while others … well, not so much. With that in mind, we have culled 10 of the best from the best: designers, lifestyle experts and, of course, our staff. Trust us: With these gems, you’ll be well on your way to living your most stylish life.
1. Despite what it says on the tag, cashmere is best washed by hand. To dry it, use a salad spinner, which releases excess water in seconds.
2. Use white wine to remove red wine stains.
3. Wash new jeans twice before taking them to the tailor. Why? Because jeans will always shrink in length when washed.
4. To stop angora or mohair from shedding, fold the garment and place it into a zip-top bag and freeze it for at least three hours.
5. Remove odors from vintage or thrift clothing by spritzing them with a mixture of one part vodka, two parts water.
6. “Remove white deodorant marks from a garment by gently rubbing the protective foam used on hangers against the fabric.”
7. If you get an oil stain on your favorite handbag, coat the mark with baby powder and let it stand overnight. By morning, the stain should be gone. If a bit still remains, repeat the process until the stain is completely gone.
8. The best at-home method to keep diamonds sparkling: liquid dishwasher detergent and an old toothbrush.
9. The secret to well-fitting everyday clothes is Lycra. The formulas to look for: 95% cotton/5% Lycra spandex for T-shirts, and at least 2% Lycra for jeans to hold their shape.
10. “Always organize your clothes going light to dark from left to right in your closet. Your eye will follow the color and thus help you stay organized.”
I didn't make any post about fashion, but I have decided to give it a try because I love clothes and find that my fashion sense is only a stone’s throw from my decorating style. I think the older you get, the more you see the red thread that runs through everything that you do and how your choices are tied together somehow, without any thought in advance. I just look at a dress and either like it instantly, or I don’t. And then I get it home and realize that it coordinates somehow with my interior style and I bask in the afterglow of feeling like my sense of style has finally come full circle and everything sorta works at last.
